Italian Spearmen

As I mentioned in the previous Blog post I’ve completed a base of spearmen for our Italian Wars project. The figures are by TAG, the flags are by Pete’s Flags via eBay, and the base was made for us to our specification by Warbases ~

I really enjoyed the riot of colours on these figures, although each one has some Foundry Phlegm Green applied somewhere to tie the unit loosely together. I’ve also assembled the Charlie Foxtrot Hermitage/Chapel and Store/Hovel and have applied a coat of filler for texture. I’m working on a base of crossbowmen with pavise now; one pair finished and one pair with all the basic colours applied. I hope to finish these by the end of the month if I can.

  1. Hi David, nice figures as ever. I am intrigued by your basing. I know that you are using the Neil Thomas rules with a few bolt ons. Are you simply putting casualty markers on the unit to denote losses or will you be fielding multiple bases. Our small group has recently started using the NT Ancient rules and I have some collections that I should like to rebase, not least because some of the figures are fragile after 40 odd years of use. I have been impressed with your ECW basing which has preserved fragile 15mms for me quite nicely. Best , Graham

    1. Thanks Graham. Each base will be a unit, so the number of figures is really irrelevant. All are 100mm wide and most 50mm deep, except pike blocks and ordnance which are 100mm deep. In the case of pike blocks to emphasise their size in a game while keeping the figure count within reason and for Ordnance to represent the ground taken up by the whole mass of extras. In NT’s rules each unit is four bases, so we use one marker for individual losses and another for base losses. Hope this is helpful. David

    1. Pete’s Flags via eBay, I take no credit for the work. They really do lift anyone’s work though.
