Just a quick note

Since finishing the unit of Regular Cavalry for Typoo Bhyka's army I decided I couldn't face another nine horses! So, back to the E.I.C.'s Army of Pendawar in the shape of their sole British Regular Infantry Battalion. It will take me more than a little while to work through the 24 Perry Miniatures figures which comprise the unit, plus the single Foundry officer I've added from the spares in the Lead Pimple! I had intended them to be the South Staffordshire lads of the 38th  but a recent release by Flags of War has caused me to revise that plan. I'll have more to say about this decision when the figures are all finished in due course.

In the meantime I've taken a picture of all the figures I've completed so far for Typoo Bhyka's army. They fill one 7 litre Really Useful Box, more or less ~

The space should be filled by the missing three cavalry bases, giving a total of the nine cavalry I mentioned, though that will probably be later in the summer now I expect.

Now that the petty fogging restrictions on our basic rights are being relaxed Sue and I have been out and about more. Recently we met her brother Martin for lunch. We'd not been able to meet for 15 months as his wife had MND and was shielding. Sadly she passed away earlier in the spring, so not attending the funeral due to restrictions it was our first face to face encounter.

After lunch at the Mytton and Mermaid we went across the road to visit Attingham; even though the house was closed the grounds, cafe and book shop were open! I bought a book for £2. I greatly enjoyed his The White Mughals, which set me on the way with my Tales from Pendawar project, so I thought this might reignite my interest in the Mutiny where Typoo's army can easily be assimilated into the Mutineers' army.

Enough of my whittering on for the present, when all is said and done this will not get me any more paint on the figures waiting patiently on my desk here in GHQ. As we edge ever closer to a return to normal life, as we all earnestly wish to see, the first sign here should be next Monday's game with Phil here in GHQ and the following AAR!

  1. Isn't nice to see that we are nearing the return to normal life after so long? Frankly still a bit strange meeting friends again after being Billy No Mates for 7 months or so.

Your army looks great and I find Dalyrymple's books great reads and he clearly has a great love for India and her history.

    1. Much as I'm looking forward to living more normally, I still think this is far from done with. Glad you like the army and the book, support still very welcome.

  3. Tis coming together very nicely there, as for getting back to normality I really can't remember what that was or if it will be again.

    1. We must remain positive, though the timescale may be a tad more elongated than we'd all wish

  5. Here’s to some sort of normality...
I’m hoping to have a few people over for beers in the garden (well what I laughingly call a garden) on my birthday... as long as the weather is nice...
It is currently pouring it down here at the moment...

That’s a fine box of toys...
Is the 7 litre box your usual choice?
I will be getting some work done in my wargames room later in the year so I will need to pack a lot of toys away for awhile... are there any sizes you would recommend.

    All the best. Aly

    1. Weather and nice in the same sentence, and you a Jock? You should know better. My storage boxes are a mix of 4L, 7L & 11L, dictated by the cupboards I have in GHQ. It's a matter of depth on the whole to accommodate standards, guidons, spears, lance's etc. I tend to make sure mine are short enough to fit in the 4L boxes. You should come for a visit when it's allowed and look for yourself. It might help space planning.

  6. Lovely looking army David! It's great you will get a game in soon. I still don't know when we will be allowed....I remember there used to be this thing called wargaming, but maybe I was dreaming.:-(

    1. Not that many of us would be considered normal...๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. I have read quite a few of Dalrymple's books, that one was quite thought provoking. A tragedy for the old King.

  9. Those forces are building up nicely. i am interested in the 7L box (not seen one before!). i use 4L, but it will not take a cavalry unit with an upright standard …. But looking into your box, you seem to have one. Is the 7L deeper than the 4L or just bigger?

    1. Both deeper, a bit, and larger of course. I have learned from bitter experience and failure how to fix my standards and guidon poles to fit the boxes.

  10. Thanks, I will get a trial RUB as the 9L deep ones I use just waste too much space.

  11. The Last Mughal was the first of his I read. As I was settling in to Delhi. I have to say that it persuaded me that I had no further interest in 1857 as a wargaming period. Just the nastiness of both sides. {but confirmed me as an avid NWF wallah} I was able to go to many of the sites, although Lucknow was considered too dangerous for me to be allowed to travel without a security escort, similarly with Patna. Too many kidnappings at the time. I do recommend his City of Djinns, about his first year living in Delhi much of which i could relate to, and his Return of a King about Kabul and the retreat. The Anarchy, about the rise of the HEIC is on my bedside table.

    1. I received 'The Anarchy' just yesterday as a gift out of the blue, so as to speak, from chum George Anderson! I've started it already!
