Athurian Hearthguard

As a part of my first order for Arthurian/Sub-Roman/Early Saxon figures to Gripping Beast I included the pack of Wolftail Warriors together with the separate Command pack of two figures. I have repurposed two rank and file figures into another unit leaving me with the balance to base up on completion as a Warband on a 60x80x3mm base ~ from Warbases of course. These venerable figures come with shields in three different styles and shapes cast on to the figures, so I have made what use I can of odd LBMS transfers already here and available. The fit is better on some than others, but at tabletop battlefield gaming distance that will not be an issue! Let's take a look at them anyway ~

These figure sculpts are perhaps 30 years old or more and were from an era when you could purchase figures individually, a lost Golden Age in my view! Packaging such individual figures together results in the odd anomaly, where most figures are advancing/charging whilst the vexilium bearer is standing stock still. Silly packaging in my view, but there you go.

Being of an age, the style of sculpting and level of detail on the figures falls far short of today's offerings, while on the positive side they paint up really nicely once you work them out. I'm pleased myself with the overall look of the base and trust visitors here will look on them kindly too. Next up under the Brush of Doom are a couple of Command bases, each of 3 figures, for the Early Saxons to represent their Sub-Generals or just be a bit of an addition to the look of a unit...

  1. Single purchase figures.... I wish companies would go back to that, rather than those horrible blister packs!!! What a great looking set of figures. I've always wanted to do the earlier Saxon figures, straight out of Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles books....maybe one day?
