South Carolina Militia for the AWI

The first of two new units for my rebellious Colonials in our AWI game, some Perry Miniatures southern militia in shirt sleeve order, mixed with militia in coats and a few ‘men of color ‘. They have been a bit of a struggle for me, so I shall be glad when I’ve finished the second batch which are underway now. As usual the flags are the former free downloads from Clarence Harrison’s site, now sold by Warfare Miniatures. The MDF bases are from Warbases, who else?

For the AWI collection I’m left with two units in the Lead Pimple: Front Rank Hessian Grenadiers and Eureka ‘Ragged Continental Dragoons’. While I was down staying with Matt and Sarah recently I bought a book on AWI uniforms at one of the Hay-on-Wye bookshops. Although not in colour, it’s full of descriptions of out of the ordinary units and uniforms. I hope that it will help me paint the Mounted figures later in the autumn. (As an aside, I also got a hardback copy of Don Troiani’s ‘Battles in America’ for my library.)
My next painting foray will be back into the War of 1812 - 15 to complete a small unit of Knuckleduster Mounted Kentucky Militia. I don’t much like the figures, but with the absurd Foundry pack contents it would cost me £72 to muster six figures and leave me with 30 other Militia figures I don’t need. So, they will do, as Phil says...

    1. Thank you Jonathan, but my old eyes and hands find them a struggle.

  3. They look very nice David...
I have to admit that I try and steer away from irregular units...they have always taken me ages to paint....

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thank you Aly! Mind, having painted hundreds of Confederate figures down the years does somewhat immunise me against a few Irregular figures from time to time.

  5. Nice unit. The new book on this period, "The British are Coming" is an excellent read, certainly opening my eyes to the conflict.

    1. I bought a uniform book only recently to help find obscure uniforms for the period.

    1. Very kind of you to say that Robbie. Fact remains though they took a long time with sore hands, as are the second unit. See you on Sunday I hope.
