I've used this system now in several collections where its seemed appropriate: Punic Wars, Late Romans, 1066 & All That, Italian Wars, and now the Wars of the Roses. All Ancients or Medieval armies you'll no doubt have noticed. Would it translate to Black Powder period armies? I'm not so sure myself, with formations becoming more complex, but in my ECW armies a sort of hybrid basing system evolved which lead me eventually down this route. I don't have plans for wholesale rebasing though, so don't panic on my behalf! It's more a case of mulling over what might be possible...
Back to the figures in question now: all Perry Miniatures from Aly's most recent gift parcels: from the Agincourt, European Armies, and the Wars of the Roses ranges. Their flags are from Flags of War, although from a slightly later period of history. The base is from Warbases, as noone surely needs telling by now! Even now though those six mounted MAA are glaring at me, daring me if you will to pick up the Brush of Doom once more...

A finely turned out base of figures which certainly give the impression of more men than there are on the base. Top stuff all round.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil. Much appreciated!
DeleteBraw indeed! Nicely done, the painting, posing and basing is all top notch.
ReplyDeleteThank you Donnie for those kind words.
DeleteAn excellent start to the year.
ReplyDeleteExcellent basing, (as always), giving a very good impression of a group of soldiers moving forward to contact with the enemy.
Your comments on my modest efforts are much appreciated, thank you Andy.
DeleteCracking good start to the year David!
ReplyDeleteThanks Christopher, only 139 more posts to go now!
DeleteGreat work David and the basing works for me, looking more realistic than them ranked shoulder to shoulder as it were. Sorry to hear about the RSI, as I have something similar in my left shoulder as a result of decades of model making as a job, resulting in a permanent shake to my arm. At least I can still paint, which is good, but detail is a challenge.
ReplyDeleteThank you SteveJ! Your good wishes like your positive responses are very welcome. I have picked up the Brush of Doom for 10 minutes this morning, not easy, but definitely less painful. KBO!
ReplyDeleteThese looks great David…
ReplyDeleteI have couple of projects that I have been basing in this /your style … It works very well indeed.
All the best. Aly
Thank you Aly! You pay me a great compliment using similar basing, I look forward to seeing how you manage the bases.
DeleteBraw indeed, looking forward to seeing them on the battlefield, tremble all, hopefully.
ReplyDeleteThank you George! Hopefully a run out in late January or early February.
DeleteLovely unit
ReplyDeleteMany thanks!
DeleteA fine unit indeed! ...even though they're Scots! The basing is superb, and as we've seen throughout many of the recent games, works brilliantly with the more historical periods. you may well be right though regarding some of the later black powder stuff... as more complex drill and maneuver evolved, it's still nice to be able to represent as such.
ReplyDeleteThank you Paul! I would have to think a lot longer about basing in the Black Powder era.
