The King Takes Counsel

One of the small issues which is a disproportionate irritation to me is those odd figures in packs which just don't fit in to the overall look of the group. Back in the day when figures were almost universally sold individually those could just be ignored, not now though. I have paid for them, so being a typical wargamer understandably I want to find a use for them on the tabletop! In the case of my Wars of the Roses project this has lead me to combine three Lancastrian personality figures with a spare standard bearer to create a small vignette, a table decoration if you will, depicting Henry VI taking Counsel with his close advisors, Edward, the Prince of Wales, and the Bishop of Bath and Wells {?} - for Black Adder fans. Perry Miniatures figures, Freezywater Publications Royal Standard and base from Warbases of course ~

Again for the heraldry on the Standard Bearer I've opted out of necessity for suggesting the Royal coat of arms as my right eye has recently been giving me some issues on close focus. On the tabletop battlefield here in GHQ I'm confident it will pass unremarked on!

I have managed to clean up the remaining metal figures I had for this project: 3 mounted MAA; yet another mounted Warwick; and a final MAA as a Standard bearer. While from Aly's gift parcels I've processed a Command base for my Scots mercenaries, a second unit of Scots spearmen, and a command base featuring Richard III. They can be spray undercoated after I finish typing this blog entry as the persistent rain has finally given over, for a day or two anyway, and the sun is shinning!

  1. Yet another splendidly rendered vignette to decorate and enhance the visual impact of the gaming tables.

  2. Nice vignette. That also seems to be the destination for lots of my odd figures. I rather enjoy vignettes. Often a nice break from painting big units.

    1. Vignettes fuel the creative juices, which in turn flow over into basing units and commanders.

  3. A nice use of spare figures David.

  4. Another great vignette David and nice to see the Bishop of Bath & Wells too, as one immediately thinks of Blackadder at the mention of his name!

  5. Nice idea, I happen to have two copies of the dismounted Henry VI …. Nit sure how that happened, but now I have an idea of what to do with the spare one :-) not sure if I read your post right ….. but if you hand painted that flag, it is superb.

    1. Two Henrys? Sounds like overstocking Norm. The flags was from Freezywater Publications, just to clear any misunderstanding up.

  7. It's good for the planet to find a use for those spare figures which are otherwise redundant and slow the spin of the earth.
I like the ability to buy single figures too. As well as the undesirable figure like the silly pose in the old box of Airfix, there are the packs which don't fit the numbers needed for a base or unit so say doing the maths to see how many packs of 8 are needed for a regiment based on companies of 5, or having guns and being unable to buy the crews you want without them coming with more guns. There are even cheaper army packs for a different ruleset than the one you intended [Saga packs when you want Dux Brit or v.v.].
Companies having their packaging systems but every wargamer's an individual and have their own ideas on what's right for them.
[I hope this is read in a lighthearted way. I'm grateful really that there are people making the stuff I want but a little chunter now and again also helps the world go round.]
Merry Christmas to you, yours and your readers

  8. Nice work David and a good use of those ‘spares’ although such lovely figures shouldn’t be called spares really ! The standard is lovely and would grace any table. Hope the eye settles soon 👍

  9. I'm sure that figure packaging these days is carefully worked out to lure the prospective collector into spending the maximum amount for unit completion! But of course that might just turn out to be part of my now (fully claimed) OAP ramblings, moanings and suspicions and so on.... Well done and all hail the few remaining companies who still give us the choice of buying individual figures!
Very nice base by the way! 😉 that's me done!

  10. A splendid command stand David…
They certainly look like they are planning something…
    Let’s hope it’s cunning …

    All the best. Aly
