Loot, and other holiday stuff.

It's just so nice to get away from home for a change of scene and air! Though it proved a different holiday experience in small ways it was mostly really enjoyable, as you can see ~

I might not have bought any painting with me for our Cornish break, but you can't keep an old Wargamer down! In Liskeard on Monday dodging the unforecast showers - the Met Office is rubbish! - I bought these two Blandfords, both in excellent condition, for £10.00.

Bearing in mind what dealers try to extort at wargames shows I was quite chuffed by this!

We made the most of the sunny Autumn days to get to the coast and walk on the beaches, but we did visit one castle, the circular castle of the Earls and Dukes of Cornwall at Restormel. Not a lot of military interest there, but a pleasant stop on the way back to base from Looe.

The weather was turning just as we left for base via the Duchy of Cornwall Garden Centre and Tea rooms - NO TABLES! As a die in the wool Republican I nearly went in the loos to scrawl Death to Kings on the walls! Still, coffee and cake was free at base camp Notter!

  1. A break is as good as a rest, especially these days.

  2. Nice to see you had a nice break! In all of lockdown I've only left Bristol once to see some friends 30 minutes away, until I took our daughter back to Uni in Edinburgh. It felt weird just driving for more than 10 minutes for shopping, but felt nice to get a change of scenery.

As for the books, a good buy for sure. I keep an eye out on ebay for bargains now and then, but I'm always amazed out how much people ask for the same book, without comparing prices first!

  5. Glad you are enjoying the break - a nice part of the UK. An excellent deal on the Blandfords, particularly the Seven Years War book. I remember paying £30 for that one alone !

    1. These Blandfords are frequently overpriced. Greed is to blame!

  7. A couple of good finds there.
£30 for the SYW one, unknown! I only sold mine for £9, but then I only paid £3 for it๐Ÿ˜

    1. I was pleased, as you know, but more especially because it undermines the rip off market in used books for wargamers. Similar to my "From Pike to Shot" find in Plymouth's Barbican area for £3 when I've seen it at £50 at wargames shows.

  8. Rest, relaxation... and new books...
    A splendid little holiday indeed...
Like you I am surprised at the prices some people charge for ‘old’ books...
A first edition of HG Well’s Little Wars might tempt me to pay out a reasonable sum of money... but Blandfords... maybe not.

    All the best. Aly

    1. I'm glad I'm not alone in viewing prices for used books as often exorbitant! Especially Blandfords!
