When I started out on this small project earlier in the year I envisaged all the command stands on rectangular bases, as I hope you will have seen with those of Edward IV and Henry VI earlier on. When it came to Command stands for the other two Wards in the armies I tried keeping the same base width but reducing the depth. Unfortunately the figure compositions just didn't look right to my eye, so here we are back on 60mm round bases for the first two stands!
First to be completed for the Yorkist faction is Warwick, the Kingmaker. The figures are all from the Perry Miniatures range of metal figures.Warwick himself is mounted, supported by his banner bearer carrying his Personal Heraldic banner - from Pete'sFlags, and two foot knights or MAA.First for the Lancastrian faction we have five figures on foot representing Buckingham and his entourage.
The man himself is supported by his personal Heraldic Banner bearer - banner made as a free download by Ray Rousell I believe, a Foot Knight and two MAA. Again they are all from the Perry Miniatures range of metal figures.
I have figures for two more Command stands, Norfolk for the Yorkist faction and Oxford for the Lancastrians. I'd hope to have both stands finished by the weekend all being well, though their flag sheets are currently in transit. After these are completed I have prepared the Claymore Castings archers, those Matt sculpted for them, to represent archers from the Commons.

Your command stands look great! I did not comment on your earlier post about having your army out on maneuvers but am intrigued by your one base per troop type scheme.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan. Since I paint both sides for almost all the collections here in GHQ I'm not really tied to any basing convention. If unit A targets unit B it doesn't matter if bases are 80mm or 160mm wide, the result is still the same. One base per troops type is the logical way to go for me. Games get bigger, quicker and painting boredom is lessened - especially archers!!!! The games play out the same we've found with Black Powder & Hail Ceasar and you get the added visual bonus of mini dioramas or vignettes on your bases.
DeleteVery commanding Mr. B.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phil! Buy owt in Tewksbury?
DeleteNope, only lunch.
DeleteLoosing your BSP#1 ranking?
DeleteLovely work sir, very nice command stands and the round base works well in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteVery kind of you to pop by and endorse my efforts, much appreciated Donnie.
DeleteMore superb command stands there David:). Personally I like my command bases to be round, as they stand out from the rank-and-file troops on square bases. I think they also look more like vignettes when round, which appeals to me from a visual point of view.
ReplyDeleteRound it is then SteveJ!
DeleteA commanding presence or two.
ReplyDeleteThank you George!
DeleteI like the interaction on base 1 with Warwick and his men. I can’t decide what to do with Buckingham as his figure seems so tall compared to others ….. but he looks good on your base - did you find the height thing an issue?
ReplyDeleteThanks Norm. Can't say I noticed an issue with Buckingham. Could it be that his padded shoulders and extravagant headgear are tricking your eye by bulking him out?
DeleteNicely done David , I think I prefer the round bases for commands 👍
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt. Always good to hear from you.
DeleteReally lovely command stands David!
ReplyDeleteVery nice work David…
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I’m for the round bases
I think you get a nicer composition…
All the best. Aly
