The Reality behind our games?

Memorials and standards of the 15th Yorkshire East Riding Regiment in Beverley Minster.

"A moth-eaten rag on a worm-eaten pole, It doesn't look likely to stir a man's soul; 'Tis the deeds that were done 'neath the moth-eaten rag When that pole was a staff and the rag was a Flag."

  1. There are indeed some ragged looking standards on show…
I wonder if they have been untouched since they were first put up…

    All the best. Aly

  2. Reminds me of our visit to Exeter Cathedral in 2015 ....can't recall the regiment, but it was a cavalry unit, I think.

  3. They have something similar in Bath cathedral which I always find rather poignant. They look rather threadbare like this and so fine as to be almost translucent in places.

  4. Always very stirring to see. I do wonder whether it is more appropriate for the standards to have been left like this or more effort made to preserve them (encased behind glass for example). Reminds me of the story of the many French standards taken at Blenheim - stored in St Paul's but nothing left 100 years later. What a sight that would be if they were still with us.

  5. Good morning David, sadly we have similar standards hanging in the Durham Light Infantry chapel in Durham Cathedral, Im not quite certain what could be done to preserve them, short of hiding them away, which detracts from the chapel.
But some good news, our new coalition council have overturned the last administrations decision to close the DLI museum and instead, totally refurbish it and invest some effort into it.
